Take folic acid before pregnancy
If pregnancy is possible, folic acid helps prevent serious defects of the developing brain and spine.
The number, drawn
400 to 800 micrograms of folic acid daily if pregnancy is possible
Why it matters
The neural tube develops very early, often before someone knows they are pregnant. The USPSTF recommends a daily supplement containing 400 to 800 micrograms for people who could become pregnant. Starting before conception is important because food alone may not provide the recommended amount.
How to do it
- If pregnancy is possible, choose a daily supplement in the recommended range.
- Start before you conceive, ideally 3 months before, and continue through early pregnancy.
- Follow local maternity guidance, such as the NHS advice to continue through the first 12 weeks.
- Check prenatal supplement labels to avoid doubling up unintentionally.
Previous neural tube defects, certain medicines or other risk factors may require a different dose prescribed by a clinician.
Do it
Pick the time you have. Anything beats nothing.
Start with the time you have
1 minute
If pregnancy is possible, prepare your question: 'Which folic acid product is right for me, given my medicines and history?'
5 minutes
Request a pharmacist or maternity consultation about folic acid today if pregnancy is possible; mention any previous neural tube defect or relevant medicines.
15 minutes
Gather your supplement labels and medicine list, noting any folic acid already included, to review with your pharmacist or maternity team.
A plan
Arrange timely pregnancy advice
- Stage 1: If planning pregnancy or newly pregnant, contact a pharmacist or maternity team promptly about folic acid.
- Stage 2: Review your history, medicines and existing products so they can advise what is suitable.
- Stage 3: Keep the agreed instructions and ask when they need reviewing.
In real life
- If pregnancy is possible, ask a pharmacist today which folic acid product is suitable for you.
- Bring your supplement labels and medicine list to a maternity appointment.
- Check whether your prenatal already contains folic acid before adding another product.
Watch out for
- Common mistakeDo not wait until pregnancy is visible: ask about folic acid before conception or as soon as you know.
- Common mistakeDo not choose a higher dose yourself after a previous affected pregnancy or with certain medicines: ask your clinician.
- Common mistakeDo not take a supplement containing vitamin A (retinol) in pregnancy: check labels and ask a pharmacist for a pregnancy product.
