Avoid taking up vaping
If you do not smoke, avoiding vaping prevents unnecessary nicotine dependence and aerosol exposure.
The number, drawn
People who do not smoke should not start vaping
Why it matters
Most vapes contain addictive nicotine, and their aerosol can contain harmful substances. CDC and NHS advise people who do not smoke against starting vaping. For someone who smokes, completely switching to a regulated nicotine vape can reduce harm; long term vaping risks remain uncertain.
How to do it
- If you do not smoke, avoid starting nicotine vapes.
- If you smoke, get cessation support and make stopping cigarettes the priority.
- If vaping helped you stop smoking, plan eventual vaping cessation without returning to cigarettes.
If pregnant or struggling with nicotine dependence, ask a maternity or cessation professional for help.
Do it
Pick the time you have. Anything beats nothing.
Start with the time you have
1 minute
If you do not smoke, rehearse 'No thanks, I don't vape' for the next offer. You do not need to give a reason.
5 minutes
Read the guide's advice for your situation: never smoked, currently smoking, or vaping after quitting cigarettes.
15 minutes
If you already vape and want to stop, request cessation support; explain whether vaping is helping you avoid cigarettes and mention pregnancy if relevant.
A plan
Protect yourself from nicotine dependence
- Stage 1: If you do not use nicotine, keep your refusal ready for social offers.
- Stage 2: If you already smoke or vape, discuss a suitable plan with a cessation adviser.
- Stage 3: Review that plan with support, making staying off cigarettes the priority.
In real life
- If you do not smoke, decline an offered vape with a simple 'No thanks'.
- If vaping keeps you off cigarettes, discuss stopping vaping without returning to smoking.
- If you smoke, ask a stop smoking adviser about a plan to stop cigarettes completely.
Watch out for
- Common mistakeDo not read 'less harmful than smoking' as harmless: if you do not smoke, avoid starting.
- Common mistakeDo not abandon a quit aid in a way that sends you back to cigarettes: get support to plan the next step.

In Germany
In Germany, e-cigarettes are not recommended as a way to quit smoking. Under-18s may not buy or use them, and liquids may contain at most 20 mg of nicotine per ml.
In Spain, the National Plan on Drugs says carcinogens have been found in e-cigarette liquids and vapour, that nicotine is addictive, and that e-cigarettes are not recommended as a way to stop smoking.
