Secure a reliable source of B12
B12 prevents deficiency that can damage nerves and cause anemia, especially when intake or absorption is low.
The number, drawn
Why it matters
B12 supports healthy blood and nerve cells. Adults generally need 2.4 micrograms daily, but vegans need fortified foods or supplements because unfortified plant foods are not reliable sources. NIH also advises adults over 50 to obtain most B12 from fortified foods or supplements because absorption from natural food sources can decline.
How to do it
- If vegan, use foods explicitly fortified with B12 or a reliable supplement.
- Check labels on plant drinks, cereals and nutritional yeast rather than assuming they contain B12.
- If over 50, review your fortified food or supplement sources.
- Ask a pharmacist or clinician about an appropriate supplement schedule if food intake is inadequate.
The dietary requirement is not a treatment dose. Numbness, balance problems, anemia or malabsorption need clinical assessment.
Do it
Pick the time you have. Anything beats nothing.
Start with the time you have
1 minute
Recall yesterday's food: if you eat no animal foods, can you name a B12 fortified food or an agreed supplement routine?
5 minutes
Check one usual plant drink, cereal or nutritional yeast label for B12; note the amount per serving rather than assuming it is fortified.
15 minutes
List your usual B12 foods, any supplements and medicines for a pharmacist review, especially if vegan, over 50 or concerned about absorption.
A plan
Confirm a dependable B12 routine
- Stage 1: Identify your fortified foods or existing supplement plan and check labels.
- Stage 2: Ask a pharmacist or clinician about gaps or an appropriate routine; report numbness or balance problems promptly.
- Stage 3: Recheck when changing products or diet, and follow up any suspected deficiency clinically.
In real life
- Check that your nutritional yeast actually lists added B12 before relying on it.
- If vegan, choose a breakfast cereal or plant drink explicitly fortified with B12.
- If over 50, review fortified food or supplement sources with a pharmacist.
Watch out for
- Common mistakeDo not assume every plant drink or nutritional yeast provides B12: read the label.
- Common mistakeDo not treat numbness or balance problems with a guessed supplement dose: seek clinical assessment.

In Germany
In Germany, the DGE says people on a vegan diet need to take a vitamin B12 supplement permanently, regularly and reliably, and have their B12 status checked by a doctor.
In the Netherlands, the Voedingscentrum advises vegans to use products with added vitamin B12 and also take a vitamin B12 supplement.
