Why it matters

Recurring conflict adds to distress and makes it harder to support each other. NHS guidance encourages open communication, listening and boundaries. When relationship problems contribute to depression, NICE recommends considering behavioural couples therapy, delivered over 15 to 20 sessions across 5 to 6 months. None of this means staying in a relationship that is harming you.

How to do it

  1. Pick a calm time to say how you feel, then listen to the other person's version.
  2. Agree boundaries, and pause a discussion when it gets too heated to be useful.
  3. If the same problems keep returning, ask a clinician or service about appropriate counselling or therapy.

If there is fear, coercion or abuse, seek confidential specialist support. Joint counselling can be unsafe in that situation.

Do it

Pick the time you have. Anything beats nothing.

Start with the time you have

1 minute

Privately name one feeling and one need: "I feel overwhelmed and need help with dinner." Use it only in a safe, calm conversation.

In real life

  • Say "I feel overwhelmed by the evening chores; can we agree who handles dinner?" at a calm time, if it feels safe.
  • Check your understanding: "It sounds like you felt left out. Have I understood you?"

Watch out for

  • Common mistakeTrying to settle a disagreement while angry can escalate it: pause and return when you both feel calmer.
  • Common mistakeFear, coercion or abuse needs confidential specialist help: do not use these exercises or joint counselling to confront an unsafe partner.
