Seat belts, full attention and unimpaired driving reduce the risk of a fatal or disabling crash.

**The number:** Seat belts can reduce death risk among vehicle occupants by up to 50% ([WHO, 2026](https://www.who.int/news-room/fact-sheets/detail/road-traffic-injuries))

## The evidence

- Evidence grade: A. Grade A: meta-analyses of randomised trials, or a major guideline consensus.
- Basis: WHO synthesis of road safety evidence and CDC distracted driving guidance
- Impact: 84/100. The impact score is an editorial prioritization heuristic for the general list, not a validated estimate of your personal risk.

## Why it matters

Seat belts keep people restrained and reduce impact injuries during a crash. WHO reports that wearing one can reduce the risk of death among vehicle occupants by up to 50%, and that correct motorcycle helmet use reduces the risk of death in a crash by more than 6 times. CDC reports that nine people a day are killed in US crashes involving a distracted driver, so attention, sobriety and speed all matter before a crash ever happens.

## How to do it

1. Wear a correctly positioned seat belt on every trip, including in taxis and rear seats, and secure children in a restraint suitable for their size and age.
2. Set navigation before moving and put the phone out of reach.
3. Arrange an unimpaired driver or another way home if alcohol, other substances or medicines affect your driving.
4. Keep within speed limits and slow further when conditions require it.
5. On a bike or motorbike, wear a correctly fitted certified helmet and fasten the straps every time.

## Talk to a clinician first

Ask a pharmacist whether a medicine impairs driving, and avoid driving while affected.

## Putting it into practice

### Start now

- 1 minute: Learn the belt check: lap strap low across your hips, shoulder strap across your chest, never under your arm or behind your back.
- 5 minutes: Before your next trip, while parked, set navigation, put your phone away and check that everyone is properly restrained.
- 15 minutes: Read the seat belt guide and check belt fit in your parked car; if it does not fit, ask the vehicle manufacturer about suitable options.

### What it looks like

- In a taxi, fasten your rear seat belt before the car moves.
- Set your route while parked and let a passenger handle messages.
- Arrange a sober driver or another way home before drinking.

### Common mistakes

- A shoulder strap under your arm offers poor protection, so keep it across your chest.
- A short journey still needs a belt, so buckle up on every trip.

### A structured start

**A safer routine for every journey**

1. Before leaving, choose an unimpaired driver and set the route.
2. Before moving, check everyone is buckled and children have suitable restraints.
3. During the trip, keep your attention on driving; leave calls and messages until you stop or arrive, or let a passenger handle them.
