Simple feedback can help turn an intention to move into a repeatable habit.

**The number:** Monitor feedback programmes: about 1,235 additional steps per day ([BMJ, 2022](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35082116))

## The evidence

- Evidence grade: B. Grade B: consistent large cohort studies, with some trial evidence.
- Basis: 2022 meta analysis of 121 trials; low certainty for total activity, moderate for activity intensity
- Impact: 43/100. The impact score is an editorial prioritization heuristic for the general list, not a validated estimate of your personal risk.

## Why it matters

An activity monitor can show whether a movement plan is happening in daily life. A review of trials found that programmes using monitor feedback increased activity by an amount equivalent to about 1,235 steps per day. The estimate had low certainty and possible publication bias, and buying a device alone is not the same as following a programme.

## How to do it

1. Use an existing phone or simple pedometer if you already have one.
2. Choose a realistic movement goal based on your starting point.
3. Review your record regularly and adjust the goal as your routine develops.

## Putting it into practice

### Start now

- 1 minute: Recall your last movement session, what you did and for roughly how long, as the first entry in a simple activity record.
- 5 minutes: Make a basic activity log with the activity, date and minutes, using paper or a device you already have; add today's movement.
- 15 minutes: Review a few days of movement and choose one specific goal based on your starting point, such as a short walk on three days if suitable for you.
- 30 minutes: Review a week's activity and commitments, choose realistic slots for next week, and plan how you will record movement and review the goal.

### What it looks like

- Use your existing phone's step record to compare similar days, without buying a new device.
- Record the minutes of an adapted activity if steps do not represent the movement you do.

### Common mistakes

- Buying a tracker does not create a routine by itself, so pair feedback with a realistic goal.
- A missed day can tempt you to abandon the record, so restart and adjust the goal to your circumstances.

### A structured start

**Use feedback to build a habit**

1. Stage 1: Record usual movement for a few days using minutes, familiar routes or an existing step counter.
2. Stage 2: Set one specific, achievable activity goal.
3. Stage 3: Keep recording and compare your plan with what actually happened.
4. Stage 4: Adjust the goal when needed and keep using the record as feedback.

## In Poland

In Poland, the mojeIKP app has a pedometer, and the patient portal recommends 10,000 steps a day, starting from 5,000 if you sit most of the day.
