Fiber supports bowel regularity and is linked to lower risks of several chronic diseases.

**The number:** Aim for 30 g of fiber daily ([NHS, 2026](https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/eat-well/digestive-health/how-to-get-more-fibre-into-your-diet/))

## The evidence

- Evidence grade: A. Grade A: meta-analyses of randomised trials, or a major guideline consensus.
- Basis: National dietary guidance plus a 2019 synthesis of 185 prospective studies and 58 clinical trials
- Outcome: adult dietary fiber intake target
- Comparison: NHS adult daily guidance
- Impact: 81/100. The impact score is an editorial prioritization heuristic for the general list, not a validated estimate of your personal risk.

## Why it matters

Fiber helps food move through the bowel, and different foods provide different types. A large review found better cholesterol and blood pressure results in trials, alongside lower disease and mortality rates in cohorts. The NHS adult target is 30 g daily, reached through a variety of foods.

## How to do it

1. Check labels to learn which everyday foods provide fiber.
2. Add beans, vegetables, fruit and nuts across the day.
3. Keep edible skins on potatoes and fruit after washing.
4. Increase fiber gradually and drink enough fluid.

## Talk to a clinician first

If you have a bowel narrowing or have been prescribed a low fiber diet, ask your clinician before increasing fiber.

## Putting it into practice

### Start now

- 1 minute: Recall your last day's meals: where were the beans, whole grains, fruit or vegetables? Pick one missing source to discuss or add.
- 5 minutes: Compare fiber per 100 g on two breads or cereals and choose a suitable higher fiber option; keep any prescribed low fiber diet.
- 15 minutes: If you have no fiber restriction, plan tomorrow's meals with oats, a bean or lentil dish, vegetables and fruit; start with one change.
- 30 minutes: Prepare a lentil and vegetable sauce for wholegrain pasta if those foods fit your diet; use cooked canned lentils for a quicker start.

### What it looks like

- Keep washed potato skins on when you cook them.
- Add cooked lentils to a tomato pasta sauce.
- Choose porridge instead of a lower fiber breakfast cereal.

### Common mistakes

- Do not increase fiber sharply: add foods gradually and keep fluids within any prescribed allowance.
- Do not override a prescribed low fiber diet or bowel narrowing: ask your clinical team before increasing fiber.

### A structured start

**Build fiber comfortably**

1. Stage 1: If you have a bowel narrowing or prescribed low fiber diet, check with your clinician before changing intake.
2. Stage 2: Add one higher fiber food to your usual meals and increase gradually as tolerated.
3. Stage 3: Use labels to review a typical day's intake against the adult 30 g target, without overriding your clinical plan.

## In Netherlands

In the Netherlands, the advice is at least 24 g of fibre a day for women and at least 30 g for men; the exact amount depends on your energy needs.
