A higher daily step count is linked with better health, with benefits below 10,000 steps.

**The number:** 7,000 versus 2,000 steps daily: 47% lower mortality risk in cohorts ([The Lancet Public Health, 2025](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40713949))

## The evidence

- Evidence grade: B. Grade B: consistent large cohort studies, with some trial evidence.
- Basis: 2025 systematic review of 57 studies; mortality estimate pooled 14 studies
- Outcome: all-cause mortality risk during follow-up, observational association
- Comparison: 7,000 versus 2,000 daily steps in cohorts
- Impact: 76/100. The impact score is an editorial prioritization heuristic for the general list, not a validated estimate of your personal risk.

## Why it matters

Walking is an accessible way to add movement throughout the day. A 2025 review found that 7,000 versus 2,000 steps per day was associated with a 47% lower relative risk of death during follow up. These observational data cannot prove that adding steps causes that full reduction or establish a compulsory target.

## How to do it

1. Use a phone, pedometer or familiar route to learn your usual activity level.
2. Add a short walk to a routine you already have.
3. Build toward a level you can sustain instead of treating 10,000 as a pass or fail test.
4. Count short trips and errands as well as deliberate walks.

## Talk to a clinician first

Adapt walking to your mobility and symptoms; step counts do not capture all useful forms of activity.

## Putting it into practice

### Start now

- 1 minute: Pick one short trip this week you could walk instead of driving, such as to the shops.
- 5 minutes: If you can walk, take a five minute walk at a comfortable pace, even just around the block.
- 15 minutes: Walk to the shops, or walk part of an errand you would normally drive.
- 30 minutes: Take an after-dinner stroll with family or a friend, turning back earlier if you get tired.

### What it looks like

- Walk part of an errand you already make, if the route and distance suit you.
- A short walk with a friend after dinner can be easier to repeat than an extra workout.

### Common mistakes

- Chasing 10,000 steps can obscure your own progress, so build from your usual amount.
- Treating steps as the only useful activity overlooks cycling, swimming and adapted movement, so count those successes too.

### A structured start

**More steps from your own starting point**

1. Stage 1: Notice your usual walking, using a familiar route or an existing step counter.
2. Stage 2: Add one short walk to an everyday routine.
3. Stage 3: Extend it gradually when comfortable; keep shorter walks on harder days.
4. Stage 4: Keep a sustainable routine without requiring a particular step total.

## In Poland

In Poland, the patient portal recommends 10,000 steps a day, starting from 5,000 if you sit most of the day. The mojeIKP app has a pedometer.
